Playing to the Underdog with Instant Gratification

We usually associate politics of the progressive left with supporting the underdog. Perhaps it is instinctive to champion David over Goliath, Erin Brockovich over Pacific Gas and Electric, and the lead role in Slumdog Millionaire over privileged society. The American right is armed with catchy slogans such as 'Make America great again', now refurbished to 'Keep America Great', 'Drain the Swamp', 'Vote for me - You have no choice', and, 'Build the Wall', but their actual policies run counter to the interests of many of their supporters. On the left, policies that would benefit the underdog, struggle to get the attention of those who would benefit most. Therefore we have to look deeper to find out what is really happening. Read more

Morning Routine for Growing your Business Creatively

Flinders Ranges

My Ideal Morning Routine

I am a morning person. I love mornings. It is my most creative time of the day, it makes me happy to hear birds sing in the morning and seeing the sun rise sets me up for a creative rewarding and productive day.

I wake naturally somewhere between 5:30 and 6:30.THere are times when I am more tired than usual and will go to bed earlier. Since I seem to need around 7 hours sleep it means occasionally that I will wake around 4am when the day before was particularly tiring. I make it a point to get u when I wake up. So on those mornings I wake at 4 I will get up and write or read for a while. Usually I will feel tired after a bit and will go back to be for some top up and then get up around the usual time. This way I can go to bed when I am tired, wake when I am fully rested and maintain a schedule. Please note: I abhor alarm clocks. Even the name puts me off. Why wake to an alarm, why not wake to peace and tranquility. I really question snooze buttons as to my mind it means people wake in alarm then drift back to sleep in that state and even go through a number of cycles in the morning. For me that would disturb my whole day. If there are schedules that I cannot miss I will set an alarm and invariably find that I wake 5 or 10 minutes before it.

Mandalas and Labyrinths

Labyrinth at Waite Campus Adelaide

While on route to our picnic at Brownhill Creek reserve on Sunday, Carol and I dropped in to the Waite campus labyrinth for a location recce for our short film "Mandala Magic". I had heard a lot about the labyrinth and wanted to take a look. The labyrinth is an ancient symbol, a mandala whose twists and turns represent the cosmic dance, the universe in microcosm. Walking the circular path that twists and turns back and forth upon itself one is disoriented to the external world and drawn within the the centre of one's being, to the place where we experience wholeness. In other contexts it represents the steps of Shiva Nataraja, the Divine Transformer, Lord of the Dance. It is a symbol found in many disparate cultures throughout the world, from petroglyphs in the Americas, to Egypt and Greece and in many European cathedrals with Chartre Cathedral being a prime example.

The similarities between walking a labyrinth and colouring a mandala are remarkable, calming the mind, mentally stepping through to a subtle realm where the cognitive brain is confused into a state of flow, allowing intuition and creative mindfulness to be revealed and revealing. Carol, Gemma and myself will be recording the sequence this week.

Should you wish to walk the Urrbrae Labyrinth, I have attached directions below.

Communication Technology and Social Media in the 1960s

Liking Before Social Media

Photo of Tummaville School Pupils in 1961

I've seen huge changes in communications tech. It began with the army field telephone we used on the farm to talk to the two families that were near neighbours and relatives. The phone in those days was for adults. Kids were a bit frightened of them. Imagine that! There was a party line for people further up the road but we weren't connected. Anyway, the operators were not unknown to listen in and your business would be spread all over the neighbourhood, and if that were untrue, it was at least the fear.

Letters written on cream wove with a post office nib were more reliable. One of the favourite jobs at primary school was mixing up the ink for afternoon copybook lesson. The bad boy in the class always got the job. Apparently, I wasn't bad enough. One time he beat me up. I was a bit on the light side and under powered for my age. I don't remember what I did to provoke him but I do remember getting into trouble for fighting. After all, I was the one with a black eye. I guess they thought he was a lost cause. No wait! I remember. He called me a bastard and I took umbridge at the slight on my mother's reputation. I knew what the word meant but didn't really understand swearing yet, and what's more I was excessively loved up as a kid.

About this Blog

Welcome to our refreshed website and blog. I am looking forward to telling you about our film, online and social development projects and describing the work we do. In the posts ahead I will be conversing with you about techy stuff; filmmaking, online television, tiny website building and much more. There will be content about our social and personal development work ranging from Carol's colouring mandalas which are really portals into some very important parts of the mind, and that are a great aid in becoming more relaxed, more aware and more oneself. There are the Aboriginal and Cultural stories that follow on from our documentary, Two Brothers Walking and many films with community centers. But for now I simply want to say welcome and we appreciate you coming on board.

Blog Images

From time to time I will my photos in posts. Like this one. Click on it to see a larger version of the image of the Banksia flower. Many of them have botanical subjects, after all, my science major was Botany. I never worked as a botanist but went into education instead. So I would like to share my fascination with flowering plants simply because I find them beautiful and hope you do too.

Comments and Blog Tech Issues

As I said there will be a fair bit of techy stuff, another passion, so you will find the blog categories and keywords useful in working out whether a particular post is likely to be of interest to you. There will be plenty about live streaming and video production so overall, beautiful and functional is my goal.

There there are the comments which I urge you to join in. You do need to do a one time signup with Disqus.com which provides the commenting service. The comments are not moderated be it is a way of keeping the conversations positive and avoiding spam. So I hope you will not find that too onerous. Post any problems you encounter and I will post a solution so that others can benefit from your questions as well.

So welcome.
