Excellent News This Week!

It's always a great week when you get funding approved, this time from Social Development Network for a short film called Mandala Magic. The film explores the art and science of mandala colouring and conversation circles for women particularly for those who have experienced domestic violence.

For some women mandala colouring and conversation circles are healing and relaxing, for others they are pivotal for developing new life skills and there are those who experience the colouring circle as transformational and they go on to develop their passion and talent and make a significant contribution to their communities and society.

How To Join A Livestream With MimoCall

Let’s say you want to invite guests or expert commentators to be part of you program. A simple way to do that would be to have them connect their microphone and camera to their Mac or PC and open a web link that captures their video and sound and sends it into MimoLive. There there are media sources that you can switch in and out of your program. MimoCall is like Skype for live TV. What could be simpler?

How much hardware do you need for a MimoCall?

Imagine an internet TV producer has invited you to appear as a guest on their livestream to Facebook or YouTube. Do you need extra hardware?

If your laptop has a webcam and mic built in like many do that’s all you need. Adding a better mic will improve the experience for viewers and using headphones yourself will prevent any audio feedback that can occur. At a pinch, the minimum setup will get you by.

MimoLive Livestreaming Software

MimoLive Logo

Facebook has made live streaming very easy from just about any smartphone. Type in a title and description, click “go live”, and in 3, 2, 1 you’re live streaming. Now your stream appears with many others on viewers newsfeeds with audio turned off. If it’s just your talking head, there is little to distinguish it from any other stream. Followers will recognise you of course. But how can you make your stream more attractive to potential followers than everything else in the newsfeed? MimoLive livestreaming software is the answer.

With livestreaming software Mimolive for Apple computers you can create you own Facebook television program with all the features your viewers expect. Whether it is multi camera coverage, rich graphic and text overlays, cut aways to location or interviews with experts anywhere in the world, Mimolive puts all this at your fingertips, literally.

Multiple surveys tell us that people are more likely to watch video than any other kind of media in the newsfeed. The question is, with live streaming becoming such a popular marketing tool, how can live streamers differentiate their message from everything else in the newsfeed? But with a choice of a talking head on the one hand or a video with all the features of one professionally produced on the other, which do you think people will choose. They will choose the image that is most appealing and has the most recognisable information relevant to their interests every time.

In the past you needed a TV studio or AV Van and the crew to run it to get this result. But in the same way that digital video has put videography in the hands of everyone who owns a smartphone, Mimolive puts a production studio in the hands of anyone with an apple computer. Whether social media, broadcasting conferences, faith based broadcasting or 360º video is you thing, MimoLive gives you the means to do it. All you need is your camera source, your mac with MimoLive and an internet connection to get you started.

In my work as a filmmaker and media teacher one of the biggest challenges was postproduction. It requires high level skills, you need to be a storyteller with a good eye and a sense for timing. Getting a film finished can be a challenge. After the excitement of the creative writing stage and the adrenalin of the shoot, postproduction is often something of an anticlimax.

In a way the whole process of story telling starts again but now the experience is intensely screen focused, time consuming and solitary. There’s not so much glamor for the film editor, whose role is often under appreciated compared to writer, director, producer or cinematographer yet it is every bit as crucial.

The film editor has to bring it all together, picture, audio, story, mood and so on. So while there are many people who love to edit and are extremely good at it, for most niche producers it’s a challenge. But a challenge that is completely overcome by live streaming and live recording. That might initially sound a bit of a leap, so let me explain.

Because we can begin with the end in mind, the creative choices that had previously been up to the editor can now be moved back to the development stage before shooting begins and those elements that are designed to give the program its look and feel, its branding, its rich media overlays and cutaway footage are all cued before the program goes to air and switched in at the optimum moment, just like a television studio.

book fair

So the presenter or reporter introduces a story with graphics and text overlays, titles and lower thirds, and then to illustrate the story, crosses to an expert across the world at their computer with a webcam, or to a reporter on location with an iPhone. Or it could be an event or conference with up to 9 cameras wired into you Mac live streaming to a global audience on Facebook, YouTube, any number of live streaming platforms or you own inexpensive 3rd party live streaming service.

Let’s say you have a business and you want to broadcast a television style program to market your product. You can do it with MimoLive livestreaming software. But what if you don’t want to restrict you message to one platform. MimoLive provides an easy solution. Record the video direct to disk while streaming, make any changes you want to graphics or text easily in post, remember the content itself has already been recorded and is complete. Now stream or post the repurposed video to your other platforms optimised for each platform before posting.

A critical element in your marketing strategy will be to have your own content hub. It may be a blog, a podcast or a video channel. Your post production can now go straight to the delivery phase, for example, if you are using Final Cut Pro X to optimise the recording there’s a service by Speedscriber that with a couple of mouse clicks, transcribe your video to text requiring only a final edit and it is ready for your blog post. Or even simpler, export audio only from your recording and post it to your podcast service. If you are using something like RapidWeaver for your website builder, simply upload the audio file to SoundCloud and put the link in a new post on your podcast page.

Potential followers are no longer restricted to the title and description of the post to know what is in a live video. Use a graphic overlay such as blog titles directly from the RSS Feed in a ticker The viewer has extra information to be curious enough to turn on audio and listen to your message. All the information is available at a glance.

So imagine a professionally produced video. What if the image on the screen had appealing elements such as graphic and text overlays? What if you were not restricted to showing a talking head or live camera but could display many digital sources? What if you were able to bring in vision from camcorders, webcams, smartphone, animated graphics, prerecorded cutaways, screen shots, in fact any digital source image or audio? Would that distinguish your livestream from everyone else’s on the platform?

The time-consuming edit normally needed after every shoot and recording has been eliminated no longer requiring outsourcing or doing in house.

Now that live stream is recorded onto your laptop in high quality video ready or near ready to post or even stream to another social platform, would that make a difference to how effectively you are able to broadcast you message, attract new viewers and engage with you audience. I’d say a resounding Yes Indeed. The need for postproduction is all but eliminated and only a small effort needed to deliver or upload to other platforms. Your all important branding is set up in advance ready to be rolled into all future programs, creating a focused and consistent format that viewers and customers quickly recognise and enjoy.

Web Broadcasting

Who needs web broadcasting?

Global Mobile Data Traffic

We are entering a time when we will see video everywhere. 80 % of web traffic will be video by 2019, say the forecasters including Facebook and they should know. It really is essential for any organisation wanting to promote their content with social media because more and more people are accessing the internet on their smartphone and video works far better than text on a small screen. The largest organisations have the resources to get up and running straight away though they are not usually the first to adopt new technologies. For smaller organisation without in-house resources it makes more sense to outsource video production. It is an innovation that doesn't have to cost the earth to get high quality productions at an affordable price.

What Platform works best?

Social media is no longer optional. But that doesn't mean every ...
